2. Data Latency & The STOCK Act

The trading data on this website is sourced from public disclosures filed under the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act. By law, Members of Congress have up to 45 days to report a transaction after it occurs.

What this means for you:

The data you see is historical. A trade reported today may have been executed weeks ago. Market conditions have likely changed. Attempting to "copy-trade" these disclosures often results in buying at a peak or selling at a bottom ("bag holding").

3. Estimated figures, not profit

Two different estimates appear on this site. Do not read them as the same number, and do not read either one as a politician’s profit.

  • Price change: The percent on a member or stock page is the change in the stock’s price from the purchase date to the newest end-of-day close saved here. That close refreshes on the morning jobs, so it is usually yesterday’s, or Friday’s over a weekend. It is not a live quote. Sales are left out of the average. A purchase with no saved price is left out too.
  • Versus the S&P 500: Ahead of or behind the S&P 500 compares that same price change with the index over those same dates. It is not a separate profit figure.
  • Dollar size: Congress reports a range, such as $15,001–$50,000. Dollar totals use the middle of that range. They are not the exact amount traded.
